When learning of this news I felt quite sad and the feeling is staying with me. The circumstances are unfortunate in every way I think, though I have not yet read of any reasons having been given publicly. |

My theory is that nowadays monarchs can live to very old age (but are not always 100% in shape for the job due to said age) so abdications will occur in places with no previous tradition for it: the Vatican, Spain... maybe Buckingham Palace? Like Elizabeth II, Juan Carlos always said he had no intention of abdicating... |

I now have read that the royal family in future will be Felipe and Letizia, infantas Leonor and Sofia, and Juan Carlos and Sofia. No titles used here because I don't suppose it is yet known the titles the King and Queen might use after abdication. Seems tough on Elena. |
