Thanks! But then neither are precisely the ones the King himself drove? I was rather hoping one was.

I'd say the second I posted is closest. But then these cars were made almost by hand so they varied. Plus, after almost a century, it is difficult to find one with 100% original pieces etc. So if you compare pictures closely you will always spot 7 differences!

Here is the King again in Santander, boarding his Hispano (it is said he had dozens) to go back to La Magdalena after watching some regattas.

Queen Ena is surely never going to hop into that pokey seat next to him?? I can't imagine her raising her dainty leg like he's doing to get in!

Which, of course, reminds me of that video of the two when he tells her in a few words something like, you're in my seat, move, and she does so faster than lightning.

How rude! The more I read about him the more I dislike him. I can't imagine what poor Queen Ena had to put up with during her marriage to this spoiled brat. No wonder she couldn't wait to get rid of him after going into exile.

Although she didn't mind when her daughters and son Juan tried to play "matchmaker" in Rome, when they "accidentally on purpose" invited the Queen to the cinema on the same evening as the King. The Queen had arrived first and was arranging her furs near the box office, when she saw the King approach (he, impeccably dressed with gloves and spats, as if going on a first date) and smile sheepishly at her.

The picture they saw has been lost to history, but Beatrice and Cristina repeated the "meeting" a few times without incident from their estranged parents. (grin)

Who knows? Maybe if he had not died in 1941 she would have relented in the end. She probably was too much of a lady to make a scene and just went along with the matchmaking plans at the movie theatre. After all she had dressed and gone out, so she might just as well enjoy the film and the "family" outing, since she was free to go back to her cosy Lausanne home anytime. She was a practical English lady after all.....
