Excellent idea, Nellie! (and impressive list of guests, Pablo!)

I think this Coronation is special for many reasons. Obviously the pomp, at which the Brits are so good. Also because that Queen is still sovereign of the UK and many other places.

But I have the theory that the fact that it was (for the first time) ENTIRELY filmed in colour and entirely televised has given millions of people a clear image of what it was all like. Elizabeth II personally intervened to let cameras inside the Abbey.

20 million people watched the ceremony on TV that day and the era of royal events broadcast for the masses was launched. From then on, every royal ceremony was designed with TV cameras as a priority. We all benefitted from the change!

BBC cameraman inside the Abbey (there were 21). Notice the full morning dress, white gloves and decorations the man is wearing!! Etiquette applied to everybody.

Commentators transmitting for other European TVs (1.5 million watched in the Continent) were supplied with a monitor and they commented what they saw in it.

Both pictures from the BBC, as seen in www.terramedia.co.uk

Thank you Octavius for some great pics there.
You have certainly made us think of the techological age with those shots, in spite of the gloves!

The master portrait photographer, Cecil Beaton, captured the Queen Mother with her grandchildren, Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

Oh Nellie, what a wonderful surprise! This is a great theme for a thread and here is my first contribution, the Queen in the cover of Life Magazine.

I don't have many pictures, but I will love to see the many wonderful ones that you are SURE to post. (wink)

Octavius, I think it wasn't so entirely... I think I have read that the ceremony was with the exception of the anointing. That part wasn't pictured either.

That is right about the anointing not being filmed.
A canopy is always used to screen the monarch from general view while being anointed.
