The sidecar contraption is fascinating but I am mesmerized by the view of the motorcycle. I believe it could be a Levis, a famous British brand of two-stroke engine motorcycles that was popular in the 20s (it disappeared before WWII I recall). That elongated gasoline tank was typical.

Good find!

GOSH! A man who reads and knows about motorcars *and* motorcycles. Be still my heart. The only Levis I knew were those worn by hippies and other reprobates.

IS SHE TIGHT ABOUT MONEY! Tightisima! ;D

You noted the most famous anecdote about her, which was true. There are any number of anecdotes about her famed Scots attitude towards expense. I think that's one of the most salubrious things about the British aristocracy in general -- they are not spendthrifts, if they can help it. Whereas the nouveaux riches just buy a whole new bedsheet, the Queen and others have theirs darned so it lasts another 50 to 100 years. If they can use a bit of glue on broken priceless Sèvres or Wedgewood, they do. (grin)

That attitude, whilst not shared by her countrymen all the time, is seen as unequalled about their class. In fact, the bad opinion of Americans held by Brits is about that tendency that Americans have of being a throw-away society. It comes from this aristocratic ideal of being thrifty and preserving what you can, so as not be flashy or lacking in heritage.

Prince Charles is just as mean as his mother. His only notable personal extravagance the whole of his life has been a U$40,000 sound system for Highgrove. Because you know, you can't listen to operas using a boom box.

Aha, so it runs in the family. I see what you mean about her countrymen not agreeing to all this "mending and darning"! After all, one would think that counting pennies is the least of their worries and that they couldn't care less about ordering new sheets by the dozen without a second thought. Again, that's what makes them and the rest of the aristocracy different from the nouveau riches! And that's probably why they have survived into the 21st century. I remember watching Stephen Frear's "the Queen" and there was this scene in which the Queen and the Duke are in bed, in Balmoral of all places, just about to switch the light off and all I could think of was "brrrr, I bet the heating has been turned off for the night...".

It's amusing how that scene made an impression on just about everyone, including me! I didn't think about the heating, though I suspect you're right, brrrr, but I did think how untrue the scene was since the Duke doesn't sleep with the Queen. Or RATHER, more specifically, doesn't share a regular bedroom with the Queen. I don't want to insinuate anything about their love life. Ahem.

And I highly doubt the Queen goes to bed with rollers in her hair. (grin)

Actually, other than thinking "brrr" I thought how funny it was watching the 2 of them in the same bed. It looked so.....middle class! I've no idea about their sleeping arrangements, but I think adjoining bedrooms is a more likely option. But to be honest, my first concern was the heating!!

Hi Sabbatical!
And greetings to everyone.
Recently I ran right through the thread and found many pics were still available, but it is disappointing when so many have gone.
Thanks for the video which I will watch later today. Just having the first coffee for breakfast then must rush out for a rather busy day.

Hi Nellie !!
Great to see you. It's all Imageshack's fault. Horrible what they've done.
William, it's a very sad story. Interesting but sad. The most handsome man ever in the Royal Family. I liked the documentary very much.
