Hello, I do not understand. :eyes:

It's just one of those small cultural things. If I explain it further, however, I can go from being helpful in explaining to being pedantic & boring. (grin) (grin)

Why?
Because we are amusing ourselves with things about Queen Mary.
She was given that third brooch - the spray of maple leaves - which the Queen wore recently in Canada.

Another photograph of the allegedly unmaternal Queen Mary.

Nellie, you wouldn't happen to have one of Queen Mary and King George which appears in the Pope-Hennessy bio, would you? It's the most tender one I've seen of them -- she's got her hand on his knee. (grin)

X-rays taken of Queen Mary and King George in 1897, then causing a furore around the world as a novelty.

You can see Queen Mary's ring and bangles and King George's cufflink, which I think is very cool. :yay: What small hands the King had!

Over in Russia around the same time, their imperial counterparts Nicholas and Alexandra, were having the same X-ray treatment.

The baby pic is gorgeous!

I have Pope-Hennessy and will look for the pic. (A bit busy at the moment.)

I have always liked this one -

AwwWWww! That is so SWEET. The Queen once wrote to the King about a long war absence from each other, saying she had gone to his bedroom just to feel his presence there -- that they were such a "Darby and Joan" couple.

From the various poems about the fictional, well-suited couple.

Hand in hand when our life was May
Hand in hand when our hair is grey
Shadow and sun for every one,
As the years roll on;
Hand in hand when the long night tide
Gently covers us side by side–
Ah! lad, though we know not when,
Love will be with us forever then:
Always the same, Darby my own,
Always the same to your old wife Joan.

Whenever I think of King George and Queen Mary, I think of them side-by-side, utterly fulfilled in each other's company, growing old together (as they did).

Joan alone, window shopping.

The lady always had an eye for a good window!

As everyone knows, Queen Mary was very frugal (not to say, downright mean). Not only did she have an eye for shopping, she also had a mouth and wasn't above asking for a discount.

I once met an elderly sales lady at the Burlington Arcade who told me funny stories about Queen Mary making her lady-in-waiting hold her umbrella as she haggled with the shop owner over the price of a sought-after bibelot.

Who knows, maybe this is the very shop, as it looks very like the Arcade. (grin)

Two shots of Queen Mary inside her Daimler. The second pic might be her last known photo, as it was dated late January 1953 (she died in March). Her long-suffering lady-in-waiting seems to have a premonition about the thing.

You can also start to see how intrusive photogs were getting. No respecters of royalty, they.

Edit: Oh wait. Is that Alice Athlone or Lady Patsy Ramsay next to her? Her lady-in-waiting of the time, Lady Cynthia Colville, didn't look like that.

Queen Mary handing over a huge loving cup after Dickie Mountbatten's polo team won. LOVE that smile.
