Historic photograph of Emperor Franz Josef getting into a motorcar for his first ride ever. Not of his own volition, obviously. You can just see King Edward next to him, as it was he who suggested it.

The Kaiser's daugher, Marie-Valerie, was so protective of her aged father, that she stuffed two pieces of cottonwool in her father's ears and kissed his forehead goodbye.

Oh, incidentally, one is not allowed to keep a motor whilst up at Oxford. There is simply no room for motors in such a small place, even for professors (who use bicycles like freshers to get around). Yes, there are some garages inside the various colleges but believe me, it's a luxury maintained by a few, and part of the caste system.

It IS technically possible to keep a motor in your third and usually last year, and that's been the convention since the earliest days of motoring. That's why you can see the great privilege granted the future King, when he was allowed to keep one in only his second year.

Knowing the British as I do, I'm sure that made him hella popular with his mates...
