That feller was Fritz Ponsonby! You remember, Octavius, I'm sure -- the man who the Empress Frederick entrusted to secrete her personal letters out of Germany, before her son the new Kaiser had a chance to impound them. He was the son of Sir Henry Ponsonby, the private secretary of Queen Victoria before Princess Beatrice.

ANYWAY. (grin)

He left a wonderful set of memoirs of his time serving three British sovereigns. Highly recommended. The bit which relates to the photo we see is that when he finally got permission to serve in the Boer War, he took various trunks of formal clothing (because you never know when you'll need a frock coat when capturing a prisoner-of-war), plus a full hamper of foodstuff from Harrods which almost all the officers took with them too.

It included a case of Napoleon brandy and in Fritz' case, two of Veuve Cliquot.

And then they wonder why with this posse of gentlemen-soldiers, who took cases of champers to a WAR, why we didn't win a guerilla war against the Boers.

Can you see it...?

I did! But only after you pointed it out. That's what I meant about your powers of observation.

The pics of the Tivoli scenes were AWESOME, Sabba.

Octavius will adore this series of photos, as it's a well-known fact that his future bride, Lady Gabriella Windsor, is as keen as mustard on vintage cars. She inherited the taste from her father, Prince Michael -- seen here at the annual London-to-Brighton Veteran Car Run. (grin)

Father and Daughter, enjoying the race.

I believe that's a 1901 Mors vintage motorcar.

Great photo of the George V Look-a-like!

She's got her mother's looks and her father's gracious bearing. Octavius is a lucky chap.

She's lovely indeed. My heart is beating faster. (love)

And my father-in-law's love of cars is such that it has been immortalized on canvas! Take a look at this 1990 portrait by Richard Stone.

He is wearing the perfect outfit for a drive in the English countryside. And that huge tie knot never ceases to amaze me!

What a lovely painting! I am not a fan of abstract portraiture of the Lucian Freud variety, you know like his portrait of the Queen with a beard, so this hits the spot, Octavius.

That big knot is his hommage to Uncle David. He's mentioned it in the past. You know it, of course -- the Windsor Knot. It's making a bit of a comeback these days, albeit the Prince has worn it since the 70s!

Is this a canvas...?
Must be hypermegasuperealism.

I thought it was a photo too. (grin)

The detail of the paintwork alone must've taken a long while to finish. The lustre is amazing!

It's a painting! Richard Stone is very realist and catches the light admirably. He has also painted Prince Charles and the Queen.

Imagen PS: What amazes me of that Windsor knot of Prince Michael is -as you say- his ability to pull it off in any decade, regardless of knot fashions. Come to think of it Prince Charles wears the same ridiculously small knot since God knows when...

However, Prince Charles usually wears a mini-knot. I don't like to see the little collar button (Does this have a name...?). I can't understand why on earth he does this.

Ooh, I don't like Stone's portrait of the Prince. He looks like he's caught him half-way having a stroke! The Queen's portrait is all right. A bit static but then she doesn't have a Jaguar in British racing green beside her to liven things up. (grin)

P.S.: Sabba, it used to be called a collar stud (stud for short). But that's when collars used to be detachable. Possibly it's called that now with the buttons, but perhaps Octavius would know more about that.

More Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Arriving at the PoW's 60th birthday bash. I'm guessing in their Bentley.
