Although the provenance of the brooch in unconfirmed, newspaper reports from 1934 suggest an interesting history. In 1934 The Royal Family was preparing for the wedding of The Duke of Kent to Princess Marina of Greece and it was reported Queen Mary purchased an impressive sapphire brooch. The newspapers assumed it was to be a wedding present for Princess Marina but I believe it was this brooch. The brooch originally belonged to the Burdett-Coutts Family, who made their fortune in banking. Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts’ sapphires were considered to be “the finest set in England. One newspaper commented “The Empress of Russia has the most beautiful sapphires in the world, though it is not equal to that of the Baroness Burdett Coutts.” Another paper reported the Burdett Coutts sapphire originally belonged to the Duchess of St. Albans, who married Angela’s grandfather after his first wife’s death.
The Duchess of St. Albans made Angela heiress to the Coutts fortune, which made her one of the richest women in England. The Duchess left Angela all of her property which could have included this brooch. Angela was well known in royal circles and held in high esteem by the Royal Family. I believe it was her sapphire which was purchased by Queen Mary.
